Want to make your ROPECRAFT experience fun?

“What should I learn before I come to ROPECRAFT?”

It’s a question we hear a lot. Most of the time people are asking about a particular harness or technique or knot, which is understandable. We’ve even had some classes that have needed “pre-qualifying” so that the teachers can give the attendees more advanced instruction.

But the most important things are not about the rope at all – they are about how you take care of yourself, how you take care of your partners, and…well, ok, the last one is about the rope.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all easily read each other’s minds and know exactly what our partners were consenting too without all that pesky talking?

Yeah, unfortunately that’s not reality. And in the world of kink, where we play with some of the darker parts of desire, it’s even more important that you understand how to negotiate consent, how to communicate your boundaries, and more. We have staff specifically dedicated to creating this kind of environment – the “Rashomon” – but you might want to take some time before the con to learn more about how kink and consent work together.

One of the best ways to learn about consent is the Kink Academy. They have lots of material about consent, but Kitty Stryker’s video about “First Encounters” is a good place to start. If you prefer web-comic for your kink education, Robot-Hugs has a great segment that really explains how consent is both sexy and complex.

That’s right, consent is sexy. It’s the playground you build together where you and your partner explore your passions. The more you know about it, the hotter your ROPECRAFT will be!

Lee Harrington recommends this ratio for a good con experience:

  • Five Hours of Sleep
  • Two Complete Meals
  • One Shower

…and that’s every day.

Your ratio may vary, but it’s worth figuring out

And I hate to say it, but: there’s no substitute for sleep. Caffeine makes you feel more alert, but that’s an illusion. Here’s why:

Stay awake longer than 18 consecutive hours, and your reaction speed, short-term & long-term memory, ability to focus, decision-making capacity, math processing, cognitive speed, and spatial orientation all start to suffer. Cut sleep back to five or six hours a night for several days…magnifies these negative effects.

Single-Column Tie

Meymoon uses two single-column ties at ROPECRAFT Austin

See that badass rigger? That’s Meymoon, and he’s doing what he usually does: rock-star suspensions. But what you may not realize is that the only tie he’s using there is a single-column tie. That’s right, the first and simplest thing that you learn in Bondage 101 is the same thing that people use for the amazing bondage you see in the dungeon.

Now, there’s a lot more to learning suspension and certainly a lot more to learning how to have a great scene – and there will be lots of classes at ROPECRAFT about that. But if you want to have the core fundamental tie that makes all this possible…then the single column tie is the one to learn.

There are many ways to do it, but here’s one of the most popular:
